In accordance with Article 4, paragraph 19, of the Paris Agreement, all Parties should strive to formulate and communicate Long-Term Low greenhouse gas Emission Development Strategies, mindful of Article 2 taking into account their common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities, in the light of different national circumstances. LT-LEDS serve as a critical tool for countries to align low-emission development with broader sustainability, socio-economic, and climate change adaptation goals.
As of July 2023, 66 LT-LEDS have been submitted to the UNFCCC secretariat. However, only a few countries have successfully done so in Africa. This highlights the need to address specific capacity gaps around formulating and implementing LT-LEDS within the African region. African countries face unique challenges and opportunities in achieving sustainable development and combating climate change, necessitating tailored approaches and targeted capacity building efforts.
Recognizing these specific needs and challenges in Africa, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Africa Global Climate Action Partnership (AGCAP), have collaborated to co-host a capacity-building workshop with the technical support from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Regional Collaboration Centers and the NDC Partnership.
This regional workshop aims to address the specific capacity needs of African countries in LT-LEDS development and implementation. The LT-LEDS Capacity Building Workshop aims to equip participants with the necessary knowledge, skills, and networks to effectively develop, implement, and monitor LT-LEDS.
