(14:00 - 15:00 EET) Climate Change Implications for Water Sector in Armenia

The proper management of water resources under climate change impact plays an important role in the social and economic development of Armenia. Around 88% of total freshwater use is accounted for agricultural activities, the largest portions of which are irrigation (57%). The remaining 39% is used for utilities, industrial water supply, and fish farming sectors.

Water management is among the key environmental challenges that Armenia faces. The challenge is further exacerbated by impacts of climate change which has significantly affected the water thermal regime and ecosystem of Lake Sevan. 

National adaptation strategy requires rethinking current water sector asset structure, processes and practices to supply water to users in the country. Some measures require large capital investments in the infrastructure. In this respect it is important to adopt long-term planning approach. Financial capacity of the Government is highly limited, and thus Government should engage international support for preparing for and adjusting to both the current effects of climate change and the predicted impacts in the future.

In light of “Water” thematic day of COP27, this event will focus on updating stakeholders and partners on identified Armenia’s needs in water sector in response to actual and expected climatic stimuli and their effects.
