The NDC Partnership started its engagement with Tunisia in 2018. Through NDC Partnership support, Tunisia's interest is to focus on strengthening national capacities related to adaptation, especially in adaptation planning, monitoring, and review. Mitigation efforts will focus on the energy sector, as Tunisian authorities have decided to forge ahead with an energy transition process based on an unprecedented strengthening of the energy management agenda and its two pillars of energy efficiency and renewable energies. With support of co-faciliator UNDP, a broad consultation process with the different key actors took place leading to the publication of a "Roadmap for the NDC-implementation" in June 2019. A Partnership Plan, also supported by UNDP, was developed on the basis of the roadmap and existing sectoral and horizontal strategies, including the national climate change strategy; the energy efficiency strategy; the Tunisian Solar Plan and the adaptation strategies of a range of sectors and fields (including coast, agriculture, water resources, health, and tourism). The Partnership Plan was finalised in 2021, its total budget (USD 7,362 million) represents more than one third of the estimated budget needed for the implementation of Tunisia's revised NDC. With support from co-faciliators UNDP and GIZ, Tunisia is now moving to mobilise resources for the implementation of the partnership plan to move closer to achieving its ambitious climate goals.
