Belize has submitted an enhanced and more ambitious NDC to the UNFCCC in September 2021. In addition to being a carbon sink, Belize committed to increase by 63% GHG removals related to the AFOLU sector and increase to 75% the share of renewable energy in electricity generation. The NDC was revised following a whole-of-society and inclusive approach. The document expands NDC's sectoral coverage, defines sectoral mitigation and adaptation targets, and costs climate commitments. The country is also finalizing its Low Emission Development Strategy to guide long-term planning for climate-compatible development. The Partnership has supported Belize with technical and financial support needed to update its NDC, including support to coordinate efforts provided by nine development partners united under the Partnership umbrella. The Partnership has also assisted Belize to develop an economy wide NDC Implementation Plan, a Climate Finance Strategy to orient resource-mobilization efforts, and improve the national MRV system to assist the country in fulfilling reporting requirements under the UNFCCC. Moving forward, the NDC Partnership will actively support Belize to mobilize actors and resources to advance its NDC Implementation Plan, by engaging national and international partners and supporting coordination, monitoring, and resource-mobilization efforts.
