Raising Climate Ambition By Leveraging the Partnership's Coalition for Learning
A rapid escalation of global climate commitments and climate action is needed to achieve the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Realising these collective goals requires a unified, consistent increase in countries’ climate ambitions.
The NDC Partnership aims to support these efforts by facilitating the direct exchange of knowledge and learning in order to scale impact and increase the quality and overall process of NDC enhancement and implementation. The ‘Raising Ambition Through Partnership’ Webinar Series, jointly hosted by the NDC Partnership, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), aims to ramp up ambition by providing a platform for direct knowledge exchange, ultimately aligning with the core goals of the Paris Agreement.
Each month, the series spotlights a topic critical to NDC enhancement and a partner with lessons to share. Topics range from deep dives into emission reductions in specific sectors to innovative practices to improve the quality of countries’ NDCs and ensure their successful implementation.
Topics discussed so far this year reflect areas where countries strengthened their NDCs through the 2020/2021 update process, and where significant scope exists to scale up these best practices. For instance, GIZ shared successes on Nature-Base Solutions in Climate Action, with examples from the EuroClima+ report “Nature-Based Solutions in the NDCs of Latin American and Caribbean Countries.” UNDP highlighted opportunities for Social Inclusion and Gender Equality in Long Term Strategies, with a case study on Colombia, and the NDC Partnership along with 2050 Pathways outlined the critical need for Aligning NDC Enhancement and Long-Term Climate Action.
Upcoming topics will include: Adaptation Ambition, Blue Carbon, Tracking and Reporting, Food Loss and Waste in NDCs, Understanding and Translating Climate Risks into Fiscal Policy & Financial Instruments, and more. These webinars go hand-in-hand with the Partnership’s recently launched Thematic Call on Long Term-Low Emissions Development Strategies and NDC Enhancement, which sees Partnership countries receiving support in the lead up to 2025 to strengthen their mitigation and adaptation targets, ultimately increasing their capacity for successful implementation.
This Thematic Call, which builds on the NDC Partnership’s Climate Action Enhancement Package (CAEP), looks to support developing member countries in preparing, updating and refining their Long-term Low Emissions Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) while also enhancing the quality and increasing the ambition of their NDCs. The overall aim is to advance LT-LEDS and NDCs through fostering a continuous alignment between the two instruments and developing capacities for their sustained implementation.
The Raising Ambition Through Partnership webinar series highlights successful examples of ambitious mitigation and adaptation efforts globally while providing a platform for discussing the opportunities and obstacles related to practically adopting or scaling these up. These monthly webinars are hosted via Zoom, and presented in English, with interpretation available in French and Spanish. The next webinars include:
