Ministry of Environment and Tourism Welcomes the NDC Partnership Country Mission to Mongolia
Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia – July 31, 2023
The Ministry of Environment and Tourism welcomes the NDC Partnership country mission to Mongolia this week. Mongolia has been actively engaging with the Partnership since it became a member in January 2017. It developed the NDC Partnership Plan from 2018-2020 to plan and monitor partners’ support for climate action in the country. The Partnership supported the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) update process in 2020 through the Climate Action Enhancement Package. The Partnership is now supporting resource mobilization for the NDC Action Plan which sets out the country’s strategy in achieving the updated NDC.
The NDC Partnership’s mission to Mongolia will support coordinated action to advance the implementation of Mongolia’s NDC and explore opportunities to galvanize further support of Mongolia’s priorities. As stated by NDC Partnership Focal Point and Director General of the Climate Change Department at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Dr. Tserendulam Shagdarsuren, “Through unified efforts and meaningful cooperation, we can safeguard Mongolia’s sustainable future and combat climate change, setting an example for positive global impact."
A climate action leader, Mongolia has outlined ambitious targets in their updated NDC, aiming to reduce emissions by 22.7% unconditionally and a total of 44.9% through international assistance by 2030 compared to the 2010 business-as-usual (BAU) scenario. It sets out mitigation measures in the energy sector, including energy production, transportation, and industry, as well as other sectors, including agriculture, Industrial Processes and Product Use (IPPU) and waste. It also outlines adaptation targets in the following areas: animal husbandry and pastureland, arable farming, water resources, forest resources, biodiversity, natural disaster, public health, livelihood, and social safeguards. The updated NDC also provides an estimated USD11.5 billion (USD6.3 billion for mitigation and USD5.2 billion for adaptation) in financial support required for the implementation of NDCs.
The NDC Partnership Mission to Mongolia will encompass a partner coordination meeting to secure support for resource mobilization, a gathering with development and implementing partners supporting Mongolia’s NDC Action Plan to reflect on progress to date and opportunities for further action, and bilateral meetings with government agencies and development partners.
Global cooperation and collaboration are critical to forging a comprehensive and integrated approach to climate action that drives sustainable development at every level, and the mission provides an opportunity to take stock of progress and deepen that collaborative approach in support of Mongolia’s climate priorities.
NDC Partnership Regional Manager for Eastern Europe, and Asia Pacific, Deo Gabinete, notes, “As a catalyst for global cooperation and enhanced ambition, the NDC Partnership empowers countries to implement their national climate plans by providing technical support, fostering knowledge sharing, and facilitating access to climate finance. Together, we achieve more to strengthen collaboration between members and government agencies.”

About the NDC Partnership
The NDC Partnership brings together more than 200 members, including more than 115 countries, both developed and developing, and more than 80 institutions to support the achievement of ambitious climate action that help achieve the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Governments identify their NDC implementation priorities and the type of support that is needed to translate them into actionable policies and programs. Based on these requests, the membership offers a tailored package of expertise, technical assistance, and funding. This collaborative response provides developing countries with efficient access to a wide range of resources which helps them to adapt to and mitigate climate change while fostering increased equitable and sustainable development.
